Time to Stand Up and Be Counted

For the first time in five years - tonight is Census night!

Conducted every five years, the Census is one of the largest and most important collections of statistical data conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It provides a snapshot of who we are and tells the story of how we are changing.
The Census is not just a bunch of numbers. It provides us with necessary information about our economic, social and cultural make-up.

This information provides a foundation for decisions made by the Australian, state and local Government and not-for-profits and businesses. For example, planning decisions about public services such as health, transport and even playgrounds all utilise the data from the Census. It is also an essential part of our grant applications, business case development and cost-benefit analysis.

It is vital that everyone in Australia completes the Census so the data is as accurate as possible and our region is represented. Everyone in the country tonight should be included in the Census data, including non-residents and children. All data collected is kept confidential and is not passed on to other Government departments.

People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile devices, or on paper. For those not living in a household, census staff will be attending visiting locations such as retirement villages, aged care facilities, boarding houses, hospitals, hotels, caravan parks and camping grounds. If you have not received instructions for your household in the mail, you can request a census ID from Census at: https://form.census.abs.gov.au/get-census-number.

Find out more about why Census data is important and how it is used in the video below.

Further information is available on the 2021 Census website.
